Newswire : Women's Basketball Adds Transfer Student-Athlete Shequana Harris To Roster - Providence College Athletics

Harris played for Charlotte during the 2012-13 season. Providence College women's basketball Head Coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl announced on July 10 that student-athlete Shequana Harris (Bronx, N.Y.) has transferred to Providence College. Harris spent the 2012-13 season at Charlotte.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Harris will be able to practice with the Friars in 2013-14, but will not be allowed to participate in any games. She will fully participate during the 2014-15 season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

"We are very excited that Shequana has decided to join the Friar Family," Robinson Fruchtl said. "She adds great speed and quickness on offense and defense. She also attacks the hoop especially well, and that is something we needed to add to our team. In doing so, Shequana will complement the shooters we have with her ability to attack. She can defend the ball in full court situations, and this also fits well with our defensive philosophy. And lastly, with her experience, we expect her to add leadership to our team."

As a freshman at Charlotte, Harris saw action in 17 games and averaged 6.0 minutes per game. She recorded a season-high five points against UNC Wilmington (11/10/12) and dished a season-high three assists against North Carolina Central (11/10/12). For the season, she hit 11 of her 28 attempts from the field (0.393), including 1-of-2 from three-point range (0.500).

Prior to her lone season at Charlotte, Harris attended Murry Bergtraum High School (N.Y.). She earned 2012 New York City Player of the Year honors from the New York Post, in addition to a spot on its First-Team All-City squad. Harris also was rated as a three-star recruit by ESPN/Hoopgurlz and was named to the All-Madison Square Garden Tri-State Second Team. On the AAU circuit, Harris played five years with New Heights NYC.

"Shequana played for a really successful high school program at Murry Bergtraum, with Coach Ed Grezinsky and New Heights AAU team, with Rock Rosa," Robinson Fruchtl said. "Growing up in New York City, she understands BIG EAST basketball and that will help our program be successful."

Harris joins Robinson Fruchtl's first, full recruiting class comprised of three true freshmen, who each signed a National Letter of Intent in November 2012. The Class of 2017 on the Friars' roster is comprised of Sarah Beal (Matthews, N.C.), Aliyah Miller (Southaven, Miss.) and Miranda Simpson (Round Rock, Texas).
