Book Review: Lost At The Con
Michael Cobb was a miserable man. Stuck in a dead end journalism job writing articles for a lad?s online magazine, Michael was bitter, angry, and estranged from his girlfriend, Laurie. And it looks like she?s been sleeping with other guys behind her back. Just when he thought things couldn?t get any worse he gets sent for the worst job in his life: a trip to Atlanta for Griffin*Con ? were geeks gather. Will Michael be able to salvage any dignity out of this?
Lost at the Con is by Bryan Young, a multi-hyphenate kind of guy, editor of geek news site Big Shiny Robot!, frequent contributor to The Huffington Post, writer of comics published by both Slave Labor Graphics and Image and producer of documentaries ? and now he?s trying his hand at writing novels. His short story compilation, Man Against The Future, has been released on the same day, so his entry into the book publishing world really comes with a bang.
Coming in at about 169 pages (on my iPad), Lost At The Con is quite the quick, breezy read. There?s quite a bit of introduction to the con at first, just as we?re seeing things through Cobb?s eyes, but the final third of the novel really flies by as Cobb?s experiences climaxes into a gigantic geek vs others battle ? with Cobb having to choose sides. Young?s ability to see a convention through Cobb?s virgin eyes is interesting, considering how big a geek Young is, and on the most part Cobb?s sardonic tone rings true.
However, there are some instances which detract from the story as a whole ? Cobb?s haunting by Space Lincoln, while amusing, seemed almost inexplicable for the most part, especially for a man who?d by then figured out that people were in costume. Cobb?s character seemed inconsistent, at times sardonic, bitter and nonchalant, but other times suffering from low self-esteem. Some might see it as all part of a complex man, but to me it felt as if he was borderline schizophrenic and hard to empathize or even follow at times as a narrator. At any rate, Cobb is definitely highly unlikeable, especially for the target market reading this novel ? but that also makes his journey a larger, complete circle.
Also, for a trashy online magazine, the articles that Cobb writes seem too serious and too formal ? I?d imagine his editor would go crazy rephrasing it, not just choosing smutty photos. What i?d imagine was less Huffington Post and more Maxim, or at the very least, The Reg. Another subtle weakness would be how Cobb suddenly sounds a little more geeky than usual (though he is a lapsed geek), at that point it?s easy to visualize Bryan Young speaking instead, given how Cobb appears to be an alternate reality bizarro version of Young.
I?ve been to SDCC before, and while the events described in this novel are warped by Cobb?s disdain and drunkeness, there definitely is more than enough for it to strike a chord with me ? the crowds, the cosplayers, the awkward looking people. Maybe there aren?t quite as many cosplayers at SDCC than at Griffin*Con, but I would think that it would be easy for any uninformed newcomer to be overwhelmed by an explosion of colour the costumes have.
Would I recommend this book? At the price it?s offered at in the electronic iterations it?s inexpensive, seasoned con goers can relive their first experience especially when things got harrowing, and if you?ve never gone to one before ? well, experience the wild extremes of a crazy convention in the US, then buy your ticket to one right away! Geeks will enjoy the book, especially spotting the references, but non-geeks might feel as nauseated as a drunk Michael Cobb, never risking a con ever.

"It also found that Tharanga had no intention to enhance his sporting performance or to mask the use of another performance enhancing substance, but that he had failed to satisfy the high levels of personal responsibility implicit upon him as an international cricketer subject to anti-doping rules," the statement said.
The suspension starts on May 9 and expires on Aug. 8.
"I apologise to the fans and followers of Sri Lanka cricket for inadvertently committing an offence," the cricketer was quoted as saying in the statement.
"I hope my fellow sportsmen will learn from my experience and be more vigilant when taking medical treatment, so that their careers do not suffer in the way that mine has."

Pentagon gets cyberwar guidelines (AP)
WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama has signed executive orders that lay out how far military commanders around the globe can go in using cyberattacks and other computer-based operations against enemies and as part of routine espionage in other countries.
The orders detail when the military must seek presidential approval for a specific cyber assault on an enemy and weave cyber capabilities into U.S. war fighting strategy, defense officials and cyber security experts told The Associated Press.
Signed more than a month ago, the orders cap a two-year Pentagon effort to draft U.S. rules of the road for cyber warfare, and come as the U.S. begins to work with allies on global ground rules.
The guidelines are much like those that govern the use of other weapons of war, from nuclear bombs to missiles to secret surveillance, the officials said.
In a broad new strategy document, the Pentagon lays out some of the cyber capabilities the military may use during peacetime and conflict. They range from planting a computer virus to using cyberattacks to bring down an enemy's electrical grid or defense network.
"You don't have to bomb them anymore. That's the new world," said James Lewis, cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The new Pentagon strategy, he said, lays out cyber as a new warfare domain and stresses the need to fortify network defenses, protect critical infrastructure and work with allies and corporate partners.
The entire strategy has not been released, but several U.S. officials described it on condition of anonymity. Many aspects of it have been made public by U.S. officials, including Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn, in speeches over the past several months.
The Pentagon is expected to announce the entire strategy soon.
As an example, the new White House guidelines would allow the military to transmit computer code to another country's network to test the route and make sure connections work ? much like using satellites to take pictures of a location to scout out missile sites or other military capabilities.
The digital code would be passive and could not include a virus or worm that could be triggered to do harm at a later date. But if the U.S. ever got involved in a conflict with that country, the code would have mapped out a path for any offensive cyberattack to take, if approved by the president.
The guidelines also make clear that when under attack, the U.S. can defend itself by blocking cyber intrusions and taking down servers in another country. And, as in cases of mortar or missile attacks, the U.S. has the right to pursue attackers across national boundaries ? even if those are virtual network lines.
"We must be able to defend and operate freely in cyberspace," Lynn said in a speech last week in Paris. The U.S., he said, must work with other countries to monitor networks and share threat information.
Lynn and others also say the Pentagon must more aggressively protect the networks of defense contractors that possess valuable information about military systems and weapons' designs. In a new pilot program, the Defense Department has begun sharing classified threat intelligence with a handful of companies to help them identify and block malicious cyber activity on their networks.
Over time, Lynn said, the program could be a model for the Homeland Security Department as it works with companies that run critical infrastructure such as power plants, the electric grid and financial systems.
Members of Congress are working on a number of bills to address cybersecurity and have encouraged such public-private partnerships, particularly to secure critical infrastructure. But they also warn of privacy concerns.
"We must institute strict oversight to ensure that no personal communications or sensitive data are inappropriately shared with the government by businesses," said Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., who served as co-chairman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies' cybersecurity commission.
Cyber security experts and defense officials have varying views of cyber war, but they agree that it will be a part of any future conflict.
At a recent Capitol Hill hearing, incoming Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, the outgoing CIA director, said the U.S. must be aggressive in offensive and defensive countermeasures.
"I've often said that there's a strong likelihood that the next Pearl Harbor that we confront could very well be a cyberattack that cripples our power systems, our grid, our security systems, our financial systems, our governmental systems," he said.
Stewart Baker, a former Homeland Security official, said Americans need to come to grips with the idea that cyber warfare could hit the U.S. homeland.
"We've had 50 years in which we haven't really had to rethink what might happen in a war here," he said. "We need to think very hard about an actual strategy about how to win a war in which cyber weapons are prominently featured."
Part of that thinking, Baker said, involves ensuring that the U.S. has strong firewalls to prevent attacks and that there are established routes into the networks of potential enemies.
But officials also say that cyber capabilities must be put in perspective.
"It's a decisive weapon, but it's not a super weapon," said Lewis. "It's not a nuclear bomb."

Estonia has blamed Russia for the attack. But, according to Robert Giesler, the Pentagon's former director of information operations, 17 percent of the computers that attacked Estonia were in the United States. He said the question is: Did the Estonians have the right to attack the U.S. in response, and what responsibility did the U.S. bear?
Under the new Pentagon guidelines, it would be unacceptable to deliberately route a cyberattack through another country if that nation has not given permission ? much like U.S. fighter jets need permission to fly through another nation's airspace.

UNC receives notice of allegations from NCAA (AP)
North Carolina has received a notice of allegations from the NCAA outlining numerous "potential major violations" in the football program, including unethical conduct by a former assistant coach as well as failure to adequately monitor the conduct of a former and current players.
The notice, released Tuesday evening, accuses former associate head coach John Blake of providing "false and misleading information" to both NCAA investigators and the school regarding his relationship with late NFL agent Gary Wichard. That included a failure to report $31,500 in outside income from Wichard's firm, Pro Tect Management LLC, from May 2007 to October 2009.
The NCAA said Blake worked to steer players to Wichard once they reached the NFL. Blake's attorneys have previously characterized the transactions as loans between friends during tough financial times.
The notice states seven players received more than $27,000 in improper benefits in 2009 and 2010. In addition, the NCAA alleged unethical conduct by former tutor Jennifer Wiley for refusing to cooperate with the investigation and providing about $3,500 worth of extra benefits in travel, parking expenses and free tutoring to players.
The school was also cited for failing to monitor "social media activity" of the team in 2010 as well as the conduct of former player Chris Hawkins. Hawkins was previously connected to trips to Atlanta and Las Vegas made by cornerback Kendric Burney, and also paid $1,000 for the jersey of Georgia's A.J. Green ? a transaction that resulted in Green's four-game suspension because the NCAA said Hawkins qualified as an agent. Hawkins had hung around the program and players in recent years, but has since been told to stay away.
The school has 90 days to respond to the notice and is scheduled to appear before the NCAA infractions committee in Indianapolis on Oct. 28.
"I deeply regret that Carolina is in this position," chancellor Holden Thorp said in a statement. "We made mistakes, and we have to face that. ... We will emerge with a stronger athletics program, and we will restore confidence in Carolina football."
William H. Beaver and Wade Smith, attorneys for Blake, declined to comment Tuesday night because they had yet to read the notice of allegations. Joseph B. Cheshire, an attorney for Wiley, also declined to comment.
The NCAA first visited the Chapel Hill campus last summer after former defensive tackle Marvin Austin tweeted about a trip to Miami. The initial focus soon expanded from improper benefits to academic violations involving Wiley, who refused to be interviewed and has since graduated.
Wichard died in March from diabetes and pancreatic cancer. Less than two weeks earlier, investigators with the North Carolina Secretary of State's offices issued a search warrant for financial records connected to Wichard and Pro Tect as part of a separate probe into whether the state's sports agent laws were broken.
Blake resigned in September, the day after the Tar Heels lost to LSU in the season opener.
The notice states that Blake refused to provide investigators with tax records from 2005-10 as well as information about a $45,000 deposit in December 2007 from Wichard's bank.
He also denied in interviews that he had worked for Pro Tect even though the firm was listed as a previous employer on a credit report from last July and that he had once been listed as "vice president of football operations" on a Pro Tect brochure, according to the notice.
Fourteen players missed at least one game last season due to the investigation. Seven were ruled out for the entire year, while an eighth was cleared at midseason but decided to redshirt.
While players' names were redacted in the notice, the NCAA said one of the players received more than $13,507.47 in benefits ? with more than $5,000 tied to Wichard ? another received $5,642.92 and a third received $5,040.20.
Those amounts are consistent with the figures provided by the school in October when it dismissed Austin and announced that the NCAA declared defensive end Robert Quinn and receiver Greg Little "permanently ineligible."
At the time, the school said Quinn had received two black diamond watches, a pair of matching earrings and travel accommodations to Miami for benefits worth $5,642, while Little accepted diamond earrings as well as travel accommodations for the Bahamas, Washington, D.C., and a pair of trips to Miami for benefits worth $4,952.
Athletic director Dick Baddour said at the time the decision to dismiss Austin came after the NCAA's preliminary determination that he had received between $10,000 and $13,000 in improper benefits.
All three players returned to campus in March for the school's workouts for pro scouts and apologized for their actions. Quinn went on to become a first-round NFL draft pick, while Austin and Little were second-rounders.

New ash cloud chaos for Australia

Last week, tens of thousands of flights were affected as airlines grounded flights, and now the cloud has returned after drifting around the world.
Adelaide airport has been shut, and flights are being cancelled out of Canberra and Sydney for the first time.
Qantas said it was simply too dangerous to fly as the ash cloud from the volcano did another lap of the planet.
With the cloud hovering right above the flight path, Adelaide airport in South Australia has been shut throughout Tuesday.
Domestic flights are also being grounded in the capital Canberra and Sydney, the busiest airport in the country.
International flights operating in and out of Sydney are currently under review.
Last week, some airlines, such as Virgin Australia, flew below and around the ash cloud, but this time they have been advised against doing so.
Qantas said its policy was not to fly below the ash cloud, because it brought risks that it was simply not prepared to take.
Last week, 100,000 passengers and 700 flights were affected by the ash plume in Australia and New Zealand.

Wilkie, Bandt bills to ban animal exports
Two crossbench MPs have introduced bills into the federal parliament that would ban all live animal exports from Australia.
Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie's bill would end the trade by mid-2014 while a separate bill, introduced into the lower house by Greens MP Adam Bandt, would ban all live animal exports immediately.
Independent senator Nick Xenophon also introduced a bill banning exports from mid-2014 into the upper house on Monday.
Mr Wilkie said it beggared belief that a succession of Australian governments had let the country down by failing to keep an eye on the live export trade.
He labelled the industry body Meat and Livestock Australia "an irresponsible, incompetent, dishonest and uncaring bunch of cowboys".
"The live animal export system is broken and beyond repair and the arguments against shutting it down are baseless," Mr Wilkie told parliament.
The Tasmanian MP said ending the trade would only have a "marginal effect" on the wider beef industry and the three-year phase out period would allow "more than enough time to move from live to processed meat".
Mr Bandt wants to prohibit all live exports "immediately".
"The only satisfactory government response to this abuse is the instant cessation of live animal exports for slaughter," the Melbourne MP told parliament.
"This abuse is not a new problem ... it's a systemic problem."
Neither bill is likely to pass the lower house as both the Gillard government and the opposition want the live export trade to continue.
A temporary ban on cattle shipments to Indonesia is in place for six months or until slaughter practices can be brought up to international standards.
