Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? Birthday Party

You may find yourself staring at a cake full of candles, wondering why exactly are you celebrating another year closer to old age. The token presents, the well wishes, the pats on the back- none of these can take away the sting of one more year away from childhood and closer to geezer hood. Not to mention another batch of terrible gifts to hide away.

People have been celebrating with a birthday party for as long as recorded history. Records show that tribes in many countries, and people of many ages all celebrated a person?s day of birth with some type of observance. Christianity frowned upon such festivities as being ungodly until the sixth century, when they finally changed their stance and approved the celebration of birthdays.

Today birthdays are celebrated with huge elaborate parties all the way down to small close gatherings. There are even places established for the sole purpose of providing a space for birthday parties, where they provide everything needed for a theme party sure to please a picky kid, if not a discriminating parent.

Notable birthday years are general larger affairs. Small children have silly theme parties that are usually great fun. Sixteenth birthday parties are usually elaborate and can even be obscene in wealthy families. Another important milestone is the big eighteen, when a child becomes an adult and receives the honor of all that comes with that.

The infamous twenty first birthday party has turned into a crowd favorite, due solely to the face that it is the legal drinking age. There are few notable birthdays after this one, until finally the parties dwindle down to just a Facebook message and a cake in the break room at work.

But what is a birthday party, in reality? An excuse to eat cake and get stuff, or a reminder that you are either not old enough to do anything fun or cool, or that you are too old and inching ever closer to old age, decrepitude, prunes and the Grim Reaper? The truth is it is a simple celebration of an event that is uniquely special to you ? the anniversary of the day you came into the world.
