Local advocates for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Cassie Whitney, Christina Powell and Susanne Whitney have put together a team to raise money and awareness for cancer research through the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Program. They call themselves J &M?s Pink Ladies (and some Dudes) and they are raising money alongside several other teams in Sussex County all in support of research, prevention and treatment of the deadly disease.
On Sunday, October 2, the team will collaborate at Delaware Tech, Owens Campus, in Georgetown, DE for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 3-Mile Walk/ 5K Race. The ?Pink Ladies? hope that through their commitment to raising money they can continue the tradition of the event to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about steps that can be taken to prevent the disease and raise money to find cures while supporting programs and services for those who are facing breast cancer.
?I am taking part in the 2011 Making Strides 5K event to join a community of people who come together to not only support each other and those we have lost to breast cancer, but to help spread awareness about ways to be checked and how important it is to do so,? commented Christina Powell ?Cancer is not picky about race, gender or age.?
For every dollar raised during the Making Strides campaign, the American Cancer Society states that donors will help someone with breast cancer find a ride to treatment or a free place to stay during treatment, keep the ACS phone lines open 24 hours a day, help women get access to mammograms, fund research to better prevent, detect and cure the disease and help those individual?s facing breast cancer celebrate more birthdays.
Susanne Whitney hopes that by participating this year, The Pink Ladies will be able to ?provide awareness and help raise funds for the disease that has directly affected numerous friends and family members.?
The Pink Ladies are offering an all day event on Wednesday, August 31 at Buffalo Wild Wings in Dover where a voucher can be brought in to support the Making Strides Campaign. The voucher is good all day and commits 20% of the customer?s total bill to the fundraising cause. Customers just need to print out the voucher, which can be provided by contacting the team, and present it with their bill to their server. Team members will be on site throughout the day to take donations, issue raffle tickets and answer any questions.
So far, The Pink Ladies have raise $470 of their $1,000 goal for this year?s event. With over a month left to go, they are well on their way to reaching and exceeding that target.
