Mobile App Developers Become Communications Companies Via WiFi And ...

One of the fastest growing and most exciting segments of the mobile technology field is in Voice Over Internet Protocol or VOIP, defined here in Wikipedia:

Voice over Internet Protocol (Voice over IP, VoIP) is a family of technologies, methodologies, communication protocols, and transmission techniques for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms frequently encountered and often used synonymously with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Since the groundbreaking development in VOIP technology in 2004 that brought VOIP services to the masses by utilizing broadband internet access that is already in place, subscribers to these services have been able to make and receive calls over the internet in virtually the same way as dialing into a (PSTN) or public switched telephone network. Over the last several years telecommunications providers have increasingly used VOIP technology to connect with other networks and switching stations and since 2008, eight out of ten of all new corporate PBX phone systems installed across the planet have been VOIP systems as businesses are moving away from antiquated copper wire telephony.

Because of the drastic savings afforded by VOIP, this field of communications technology has the power to do a lot of good by helping to make communication more affordable for people who may currently be unable to afford to have even basic access to telecommunication service. Unfortunately, in some parts of the developing world, access to VOIP is restricted or even prohibited as it is in Guyana. In Panama, VOIP services are taxed, while in Ethiopia, it is a criminal offense to offer VOIP services due to the government?s monopoly on the telecommunications industry there. In the UAE and Oman, it is also against the law to use VOIP in any way and in Oman violators are subject to up to two years in jail and fines as high as $130,000 USD.

With the major advances that have come about in the mobile communications industry, VOIP and WiFi have come together to provide free and inexpensive communication services to mobile users by allowing them to make calls, send and receive texts and more over the internet from their smart phones. WiFi, or Wireless Fidelity, is a term created by Interbrand, a consulting firm hired by the WiFi Alliance to come up with a more marketable name than IEEE 802.11B Direct Sequence and was first used in 1999.

There have been many exciting developments in recent months that are strong indicators that the future of mobile communication via WiFi and VOIP is incredibly bright. Microsoft saw the value in the technology when it purchased Skype for nearly 9 billion dollars, Google is working diligently to perfect its Google Voice for mobile, Facebook as released a mobile communications app using VOIP, and there are many others throwing their hats in the ring as well.

Meanwhile in the WiFi arena, Ruckus Wireless has teamed with KDDI in Japan to create a nationwide WiFi network across Japan and Barbados recently announced plans for free coast to coast WiFi on the Caribbean Island to help encourage economic growth there and create a more business friendly environment as well. In Barbados, the plans are already causing a disturbance of the status quo from telecom companies there who are afraid that the availability of WiFi and VOIP will allow for more affordable communication from other providers such as mobile communications app companies that are able to offer free member to member calling and texting as well as the lowest possible international calling rates by utilizing VOIP and WiFi technology.

All indicators show that the future of mobile communications resides in WiFi and VOIP, a forward looking statement that is sure to become more widely known as the numbers of people using the new technology grow and the infrastructure keeps evolving to support it. The future is here today, download a mobile communications application like the one below and start experiencing the freedom of affordable communication.
