Lindsay Lohan got some good news on Thursday when she appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court and a judge formally ended her lengthy supervised probation from two 2007 DUI arrests. Wearing a powder blue pants suit, the troubled actress earned praise for completing her court-mandated counseling sessions and 480 hours of community service.

According to the Los Angeles Times, at the final probation status check in for Lohan in connection with a shoplifting conviction and probation violations from the 2007 arrests, Judge Stephanie Sautner said Lohan had finished her obligations for counseling and community service in "short of a year and she has done everything this court asked her to do."

The actress completed the final counseling sessions and community service work at the Los Angeles County morgue earlier this week. Sautner then announced that the five years of probation for the DUI case were officially over and that she was putting Lohan on unsupervised probation for the shoplifting incident until May 2014.

"The only terms for you are for you to obey all laws," Sautner said.

"You don't need to come to court anymore." In addition to countless court appearances, Lohan has been jailed several times
 for violations stemming from drug use to failing to do her required community service.

Clearly pleased, Lohan, 25, told the judge, "I just wanted to thank you for being fair. What you've done has really opened a lot of doors for me."

Lohan has been working on getting her career back on track, recently appearing in an episode of "Saturday Night Live",
 booking a "Glee" gig
 and signing up to play Elizabeth Taylor
 in a TV movie.

But, before the hearing ended, Sautner had one more piece of advice for Lohan. "Stop nightclubbing and focus on your work," she counseled.

As one moves down the credit spectrum into good to poor to bad, the story begins to change. The average auto finance firm expects most of its business to be poor credit but good enough to pay the loan and not require the car be reprocessed. For an auto finance company this is a great business model. It allows them to charge high interest rates with only a reasonable amount of risk. At high rates they do not even have to finance a lot of cars to have a very viable business. It is in this ?gray area? that many of today?s auto buyers find themselves.

For those credit challenged with bad credit, normally the last option and lowest place on the totem pole is ?buy here pay here?. In this circumstance the seller actually counts on having to reprocess the car. They realize the credit starved buyer has little or no options so they start by inflating the price of the car. For example a car that may sell on the used car lot of a franchised dealer for $10,000 will easily be $15,000 at a buy here pay here. Often they also require the buyer to put money down and, at the same time, charge the highest interest rates that are legal. Caught up in this set of variables, the buy here pay here dealer does not expect the buyer to pay on the car for too long. They reprocess the car and just sell it again in the same scenario.

If you are one of the millions of Americans who have to look at auto loans for bad credit, the place to start is not even at the auto finance company and certainly not at the buy here pay here dealer. By far the best place to start is the internet. In the privacy of your home you can compare the rates and offers of multiple outlets without ever leaving home. You will be able to determine what your credit will be able to finance and can often get your financing approved over the phone. This way, you are in control and understand what you are getting into.

Destruction as Syrian forces take opposition town

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists said Wednesday a government offensive in northern Syria during which troops overran a major opposition stronghold has left behind scenes of destruction, with corpses in the streets, homes burned to the ground and shops that have been pillaged and looted.

The reports of 40 people dead in Saraqeb since Sunday come as Arab leaders meeting in Baghdad remain deeply divided over how to help solve Syria's yearlong crisis. President Bashar Assad said he has accepted a six-point U.N. plan to resolve the conflict, including a cease-fire, but the opposition is deeply skeptical that he will carry it out.

The fall of Saraqeb, a large town on the main highway linking the northern city of Aleppo with the Syrian capital, was the latest in a string of opposition strongholds to fall to ruthless assaults by the better-equipped Syrian military. Most of those strongholds and areas around them have since seen renewed flare-ups in violence, reflecting the resiliency of the uprising and the military's inability to firmly put down the revolt.

Activists on Wednesday also reported clashes between Syrian army units and rebels in the country's center, east and south.

At least four civilians, four soldiers and five army defectors were killed in the central town of Qalaat al-Madiq and nearby villages, activists said, as troops advanced and closed in on rebels. The town, in Hama province, has been battered by heavy machine guns and artillery for days. Activists said the town's historic castle was not spared the shelling.

"People are fleeing their homes, many of them unsure which direction to take," said an activist in the area who identified himself as Ammar.

The military seized Saraqeb overnight after a four-day offensive that began Sunday. Rebel fighters had an active presence in the northern town and used it as a base to target army convoys nearby. In Saraqeb, as in other towns and cities recaptured recently by the army, Syrian troops left behind a trail of death and destruction.

The Local Coordination Committees network issued an appeal for international humanitarian organizations to urgently visit the town and said there were many unidentified corpses and wounded people there.

"Regime forces have forcibly displaced a large number of activists' families, and burned and shelled approximately 300 homes. They also pillaged and set fire to most shops," the LCC said in a statement.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the reports and said most of the town's residents had fled along with the rebels. It said more than 40 people had been killed during the fighting over recent days.

The reports by the groups and by other activists could not be independently confirmed. Video from Saraqeb posted on the Internet appeared to back claims of destruction and pillaging.

One video showed what appeared to be a destroyed home. Another showed burned out apartments, several burned cars and a row of shops with their shutters blown off. The slogan "Down with Bashar" was sprayed on one of the shutters. "Down with Iran's dog," read another. Iran is one of Syria's last close allies.

Activist Fadi al-Yassin in the northern province of Idlib said the army was now in full control of Saraqeb, stationing snipers on rooftops and conducting searches and raids using civilian cars and taxis to confuse residents.

He said army defectors known as the Free Syrian Army resisted on the first day but then pulled out, fearing that they would bring more destruction on the town.

"They fled because there was no way they were going to be able to face the regime's huge military force," he said by satellite phone.

He put the toll at around 50 killed since Sunday, mostly civilians but also including rebel fighters.

"The situation is very hard on the ground, and it's difficult for us to get there to find out exactly what is going on because the army is in complete control of the city," al-Yassin said.

Elsewhere, three Syrian soldiers were killed in clashes with rebels in the central province of Homs on Wednesday. The Observatory said the fighting broke out when government forces tried to enter the town of Rastan, which is in the hands of army defectors. The activist group also reported clashes in the Deir el-Zour province along the Iraqi border and said government troops fired mortars at the city of Homs.

The fresh violence coincides with a new wave of international diplomacy seeking to end the conflict that the U.N. says has left more than 9,000 people dead.

Syria said Tuesday that Assad accepted a peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. The plan calls for Damascus to immediately stop troop movements and use of heavy weapons in populated areas and to commit to a daily two-hour halt in fighting to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

It also calls for a full cease-fire to be supervised by the U.N. so that all parties can discuss a political solution.

Members of the fractured opposition struggling to end Assad's rule accused him of using the plan to stall for time as his troops make a renewed push to finish off bastions of dissent.

The U.S. and Britain, both of which have called on the Syrian president to step down, said Assad must back his words with action.

The 22-member Arab League was discussing a new resolution on the Syria conflict at a summit in Baghdad. The body's foreign ministers were expected to ask their heads of state to urge the Syrian regime to halt its crackdown on civilians, allow humanitarian groups into the country and free detainees. The ministers were meeting in the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, and heads of state will gather on Thursday.

A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdessi, said Damascus would "not deal with any initiative" that might come out of the 22-member Arab League.

The League suspended Syria's membership last year as a part of a package of sanctions aimed at pressuring it to stop the crackdown.

Arab countries are divided over how aggressively to intervene in Syria's turmoil. Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are believed to want to start providing weapons to Syria's rebels and even carve out a "safe area" inside the country that the opposition can use as a staging ground.

Iraq, the host of this week's summit, is more cautious. Baghdad's Shiite-dominated government is close to Iran, Assad's closest ally, and is wary of hurting those ties.

Breast Cancer Survivor Walks To Celebrate, Spread Hope To Others ...

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ? Diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago, Leonor Gavina-Valls will be among the thousands taking part in the Susan G. Komen L.A. County Race for the Cure on Saturday.

Leonor has been walking for the cure ever since her diagnosis and she said that she will not quit until there is a cure.

?I have been walking since 1998. That was the year that I was diagnosed, as well as I started my chemotherapy,? Leonor said.

When thousands of runners and walkers take to Dodger Stadium this weekend, they may kick it off with a cup of coffee. What most people do not know, is that there is a personal connection to every sip they drink.

That is because Leonor is Vice President of Marketing for Don Francisco?s Coffee. Ever since her diagnosis and first walk 14 years ago, her company proudly donates coffee for everyone at the race.

?And to me [it?s] so important to be part of it, because it gives me a great feeling that I can do something,? Leonor said.

When Leonor was diagnosed she was 46-years old and taking care of her two young children. It was not an easy time, but she can now call herself a survivor.

Still, when she walks among all the others each year, she is reminded of that tough time.

?Many times when I see somebody that has very short hair or no hair at all? I remember what it was like ?and I try to be there for them. It?s a good feeling. And I let them know that there is hope,? she said.

She said that it is important to always stay positive.

Her work is very important to her, but so is her work with Race for the Cure. She knows that 25 percent of the money raised goes to research, while 75 percent stays right here in the Los Angeles area to help people in the fight against breast cancer.

?I believe that there is about 61 percent of the Latinas in Southern California that do not have insurance. Thanks to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, many of the Latina women that do not have insurance are able to get mammograms,? she said.

Leonor feels privileged to be among the survivors. She said the race has become such an important day for her that last year her team was the largest in the race and thus the trophy.

?They join because we see it as a celebration. Some people bring dogs, they bring kids, you know, it?s a family celebration,? Leonor explained.

So Saturday she will walk again with those she loves around her and she will continue to walk to year after year until a cure is found. And once a cure is found, she said that she will still walk to celebrate.

?Never, never give up? Never give up,? she said.

This year?s Race for the Cure is Saturday, March 24, at Dodger Stadium.

Mothers' exposure during pregnancy to a class of air pollutants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can lead to behavioral problems in their children. PAH are released to air during incomplete combustion of fossil fuel such as diesel, gasoline, coal, and other organic material.

The study is the first report of associations between child attentional and behavioral problems among school?age children and two complementary measures of prenatal PAH exposure: monitored air concentrations of PAH and a PAH-specific biomarker of exposure measured in maternal and umbilical cord blood. The paper, "Prenatal Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Exposure and Child Behavior at age 6-7," published online today in Environmental Health Perspectives, adds to rising concerns about the risks associated with exposures to air pollution during pregnancy.

The study followed the children of 253 non?smoking inner-city women who gave birth between 1999 and 2006. Researchers led by Frederica Perera, DrPH, director of the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, measured two complementary indicators of PAH exposure. One indicator was the PAH concentration in air from personal air sampling which took place during the third trimester of pregnancy. The other was a specific biological marker of exposure-- PAH?DNA adducts measured in maternal blood and newborn umbilical cord blood. When inhaled by the mother during pregnancy, PAH can be transferred across the placenta and bind to the DNA of the fetus, forming "adducts" in blood and other tissues and providing a biologic measure of pollutant exposure.

Mothers completed a detailed assessment of their child's behavior (including whether the children experienced symptoms of anxiety, depression, or attention problems. High prenatal PAH exposure, whether characterized by personal air monitoring or maternal and newborn cord adducts, was significantly associated with symptoms of Anxious/Depressed and Attention Problems.

In urban air, traffic emissions are a dominant source of the pollutants measured in the study. Illustrating widespread exposure to these pollutants, 100% of the mothers in the Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health NYC cohort had detectable levels of PAH in prenatal personal air samples, although levels varied widely. The authors accounted for other sources of PAH such as environmental tobacco smoke and diet in their analyses. None of the mothers in the study were smokers.

"This study provides evidence that environmental levels of PAH encountered in NYC air can adversely affect child behavior. The results are of concern because attention problems and anxiety and depression have been shown to affect peer relationships and academic performance," said Dr. Perera, the study's lead author.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Voters hunting a candidate who can defeat President Barack Obama and with the proper experience were giving Mitt Romney a huge advantage in Tuesday's Illinois presidential primary, according to preliminary results of an exit poll of voters. His lead was also being powered by robust margins from people worried about the economy and federal deficits.

Main challenger Rick Santorum was running strongly among people who want their contender to be a real conservative and to exhibit strong moral character, and with the most religiously driven voters. But Illinois only has modest proportions of such voters, narrowing Santorum's appeal.

Romney was getting the votes of 7 in 10 people seeking a candidate who can defeat Obama. Among states where voters have so far been polled, that proportion has only been surpassed in Massachusetts, where he was once governor, and Virginia, where he and Texas Rep. Ron Paul were the only competitors.

Romney was also getting 6 in 10 votes of people seeking the right experience. Combined with voters seeking a candidate who can best handle Obama, that gave Romney a forbidding lead among over half of those who showed up to cast ballots, the survey showed.

Romney, who has used his business background to cast himself as the candidate best equipped to create jobs and eliminate federal waste, led Santorum by nearly 20 percentage points among voters riveted on the economy and the federal deficit as top issues.

Santorum had nearly a 2-1 lead over Romney among voters saying that sharing religious beliefs with a candidate mattered greatly. Such voters, though, accounted for just shy of 1 in 4 voters, a slightly smaller share than average among states whose voters have so far been surveyed.

The former Pennsylvania senator was also getting around two-thirds of the votes of those seeking a real conservative and a contender with strong character. But such voters were comprising less than half the overall vote.

Though Santorum was leading among those considering themselves very conservative, Romney had a narrow lead with all conservatives and a strong advantage among moderates.

With Illinois voters ranking about average in terms of how conservative its Republicans are, a third voting Tuesday called Santorum too conservative. That was the highest portion of voters expressing that view in any of the six states so far where that question was asked.

The survey of 1,551 Illinois voters was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. Interviews were conducted as voters left their polling places Tuesday at 35 randomly selected sites. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
