IDX Civil War: Austin Listing Syndication Battle Heating Up | Real ...
As the internet continues to become the dominant force in the real estate industry, many agents & Boards of Realtors are now realizing the long term impacts of choices that they may have made several years ago, and how they are impacting their business today.? The latest news is of an IDX Civil War in Austin Texas regarding listing syndication and its impact on the industry as a whole.
Listing syndication is definitely a hot topic nowadays ? and is definitely gaining momentum as persons realize the importance of their online presence.? However, there is some misunderstanding even amongst agents themselves.
The issue REALLY needs to be broken down into 2 topics:
#1? How listings should be handled with syndication/advertisement on 3rd party listing aggregation companies (such as Zillow, Trulia, etc.).
#2 How listings should be handled among cooperating licensed brokers & agents on their respective websites that are members of the same Board of REALTORs.
?
Many persons mistakenly are attempting to lump it all together as ?all internet advertising?.? Touching on the first topic of 3rd party listing aggregation companies.? Essentially, these are a 3rd party group of venture capitally funded persons whose primary business model is to take Listings for ?free? from agents ? and then sell leads directly (through selling of buyer leads themselves) or indirectly (through featured agent/listing placement on their site).? Basically ? they take something for free from agents, and then repackage it ? and charge agents a fee for something that agents gave to them in the first place.
These 3rd party companies typically are not licensed to practice real estate, nor are they typically members of the local Boards of REALTORs.? This also means that they do not have to comply with the same exact rules as licensed agents that are furnishing the listings in the first place.? (Such as:? These 3rd party companies generally are able to display SOLD listing data on their site, whereas licensed real estate agents generally are not.)? This places agents at a tremendous competitive disadvantage.? They have more rules and regulations with which to comply ? and yet, they are competing for the very same internet presence that the 3rd party companies are attempting to get.
As a result, many agents are wanting a more level playing field.? They feel that whatever these 3rd party sites are able to do (or not do) from a marketing standpoint, the same should be applied to agents.? For the agents that are concerned about listing syndication for the 3rd party sites:? its all about free trade, and fair play in business ? and a level playing field.
Additionally, many REALTORs that are primarily Listing or Seller?s Agents, are also wanting to get items added to the listings that are displayed such as Their Phone Number, Website Address, Email, Logo, Watermarking of their Photos with their Team Branding Contact Information, etc on these syndicated sites ? so that customers can contact them directly without having to pay for the leads.
Editorial Note:? I personally have no issue whatsoever with additional agent branding, contact info, etc being required for use on the 3rd party syndication sites.
?
The 2nd half of the topic is listing syndication commonly referred to as IDX across other agents websites.? This is where the issue takes an entirely different spin.? It needs to be recognized that there are 2 types of agents:
1.? BUYER AGENTS
2.? SELLER AGENTS (aka listing agents)
Unlike the above issue, Agents are all operating on the same level playing field from a rules/regulation standpoint of marketing.?? Those persons that want an internet presence to create a Buyer?s Brokerage, are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that end.? Those persons that want to solicit listings and be a Seller?s Brokerage (listing brokerage), are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that desired goal.
Its all about cooperating and working together for the good of the industry, and making it easy for consumers.? The addition of listing broker team branding/logos/contact information, etc ? would cause the Buyer?s Agents to essentially be providing advertising for Listing Agents, as the consumer would be more likely to call the Listing Agent despite the lead being generated from the Buyer?s Agents website.
This would be fairly akin to saying:? ?Buyer?s Agents should be able to place THEIR sign in the yard of listings that other agents have?.? After all, more advertisement is good for their seller, right????? It makes the exact same sense.
Listing agents already have a tremendous amount of advantages in place:? yard signs, open houses, local media advertisements, postcard mailouts, etc, etc.? Beyond the internet, what do Buyer?s Agents have that will realistically generate business in today?s market?? Very little.? The conversion numbers of customers from a postcard that says ?Want to Buy a Home?? Call me.? are going to be very low, compared to what the listing agent is able to generate with advertising their listings.
If listing agents were allowed to have the additional contact information, or branding advertisements (logos, watermarking of photos, etc), this will completely segment real estate agents as a whole ? because Buyers Agents will not advertise listings that have their competitors contact information on it.? What would consumers do if this happens?? This would be a tremendous blow to the industry, as it would force consumers to go to the 3rd party listing aggregation sites to find ?all the listings? that are currently on the market.
The solution is to separate the topic into 2 issues.? Address them separately.? And to unite REALTORs together for the common good of the industry.

Porn on Pinterest masquerades as 'thinspiration'
By Helen A.S. Popkin
?
Less than a week after Tumblr officially banned pro-anorexia and bulimia blogs, Business Insider's Jim Edwards notes that bulletin board-like social site Pinterest is also home for "thinspiration" ? "thinspo" for short.
What's more, "thinspo" photos "pinned" and shared?? often featuring scantily clad, sometimes-naked women, many with grotesquely protruding bones ? are bypassing Pinterest's no-nudity rule. As such, search for porn on Pinterest, and "you get pictures of shoes, real estate and kitchen gadgets that people have ironically labeled porn because of their acquisitive lust, not their actual lust," Edwards writes.
"Thin" is one of the search terms that turns up revealing photos of malnourished women, typical fare for the "pro-ana" community that's been on the Internet almost as long as porn.?True, you can find naughty images that aren't meant to inspire eating disorders via a search for "erotica," "boudoir" or "sexy." Mostly however, these key words turn up photos about as racy as World War I-era French postcards, or the far more sexually charged images used in fashion magazines of today. Meanwhile, a search for "sexy" turned up a headshot of a young Bob Dylan, among other things.
Arguably, it's the images of malnourished women that are more unnerving than these "adult entertainment" images you'll find on Pinterest. Edwards writes:
If you want a disturbing look at how pro-anorexia women view themselves and the world, check out pins tagged "thin" on Pinterest. A large portion of those images are from women who have pointed a cellphone camera at themselves while standing in their underwear in front of the bathroom mirror.
As Edwards writes, Pinterest will need to deal with this "porn problem" if it hopes to attract advertisers. Meanwhile, anyone looking for actual "porn" is better served hitting one of the many Pinterest clones specifically designed for that purpose. Pornterest, for example, and we're totally not making that up.
More on the annoying way we live now:

How accurate are rapid flu tests?
A new study conducted by researchers from McGill University, the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC), and Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Centre, Montreal, has put the accuracy of rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDTs) under the microscope. The meta-analysis of 159 studies showed three key findings: that RIDTs can be used to confirm the flu, but not to rule it out; that test accuracy is higher in children than it is in adults; and that RIDTs are better at detecting the more common influenza A virus than they are at detecting influenza B.
The research, led by by Dr. Caroline Chartrand, Sainte-Justine Hospital staff pediatrician and researcher, was published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
Early flu diagnosis is key for both optimal patient care and infection control. While viral culture and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests have been the gold-standards for detecting influenza, they can be expensive and the turn-around time for results range from one to 10 days. RIDTs attempt to overcome some of these problems. They are simple to use, give results in 15 to 30 minutes without having to be sent to a lab and in most cases, can be administered in routine clinical settings, like a doctor's office or emergency departments.
With more than 25 rapid flu tests on the market, doctors and healthcare providers need to make sense of the voluminous literature on these tests. "This is exactly why we needed a meta-analysis," said Dr. Madhukar Pai, senior author on the study, associate professor at McGill's Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and a researcher at the RI MUHC. "So many papers have been published, especially since the H1N1 pandemic, but no one had synthesized this body of literature into one single cohesive piece. Our hope is that this work will help in informing future guidelines on the use of these tests."
What do the study results mean for patient care? "Our results suggest a case for routine implementation of these tests at the point-of-care, especially among children, during flu season," explained Dr. Chartrand, who was a McGill master's student when she conducted the research. "It would have to be shown in clinical practice, but the routine use of these tests could mean significant improvements in patient care, especially children. For example, if you know your patient has the flu, you might not need to run other tests. Maybe you'd be able to prescribe antiviral medication earlier. And perhaps flu patients would be triaged differently and sent home more quickly, which is great news for high-traffic emergency rooms and clinics during the flu season. But it is important to note that rapid flu tests can be falsely negative and therefore should not be used to rule out flu."
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, between 2,000 and 8,000 Canadians can die of the flu and its complications each year, depending on the severity of the season. The Centre for Disease Control in the U.S. puts their number anywhere between 3,000 and 49,000 annually.
"Influenza treatment is most effective when started early in the course of the illness. The ability to start specific influenza therapy sooner in persons at high risk for complications, such as pregnant women or individuals with heart disease, and who have a positive rapid test result, is a major benefit of these tests," said Dr. Timothy Brewer, Director of Global Health Programs at McGill and one of the study authors.

Angles to a joint tenancy in home ? Business Management Daily ...
Q.? My fianc? and I are planning to buy his retired mother?s home where we will live.?What?s the best way to structure this? J.R.C., CPA, Winter Park, Fla.
A. From a legal perspective, the most common method to use in this situation?is a joint tenancy with right of survivorship.?Each owner holds an undivided share of the estate.?On the death of one joint owner, the surviving owner?retains an undivided right to the entire estate, which is not subject to the rights of the?deceased?s heirs. Absent other circumstances, this seems like your best bet.
Tip: If you wait until you?re married to acquire the home, you can claim the tax benefits of home ownership (e.g., mortgage?interest and property tax deductions) on a joint return.

The Presence of Religion In Paintings
Religion has an important place in the paintings. Biblical paintings are an all time favorite of both the artists and the art lovers. Biblical paintings have an immediate effect on the thinking and belief of the people. The paintings are mostly created on the events in the life of Jesus, the mother and the child, the angels and Crucifixion. One of the best contemporary painters of Christian art is undoubtedly Ron Dicianni. Christian art has not changed much except for the colors used and the way of presentation.
Why biblical paintings are so much in demand?
If you visit any art gallery or online art shop, you will find most of the paintings depicting religion or religious events. Most of the famous artists including Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Picasso have also painted Christian arts. People prefer buying these paintings than any other types of paintings. The reasons for popularity of biblical paintings are many. Some of them include:
? Simple and familiar: The first and foremost appeal of biblical painting is its simplicity and familiarity. Anyone can easily understand the underlying meaning of the painting. Every story that is depicted is taken from the bible and even a small child is familiar with it. Moreover, most of these paintings are clear in their meanings.
? Colorful: Another important appeal of these paintings is the splash of color in them. Most of the biblical paintings have myriads of colors and they are extremely bright. The color combinations and the brightness make them ever popular.
? Inspirational: All the biblical paintings provide inspiration. The stories of bible and Jesus inspire people to lead an honest and spiritual life. These paintings also inspire people during their most depressing times to overcome the problems. They provide motivation to live life praising God and his creations.
? Universal: The Christian art has a universal appeal all over the world and people can identify with the paintings any time any where. This universal appeal has made these paintings most sought after.
Some famous all time favorite biblical paintings are:
? ??Creation of Adam? by Michelangelo
? ?David and Goliath? by Caravaggio
? ?The Last Supper? by Leonardo da Vinci
? ?The Annunciation? by El Greco
? ?The Apparition? by Gustave Moreau
One of the modern day painters who is worth mentioning here is Ron Dicianni. He is one of the most revered and popular biblical painters alive. He has painted many spiritual paintings which are sold for millions of dollars. One of his most important work of art includes ?The Resurrection Mural?. It is a 40 feet by 12 feet oil on canvas mural that is commissioned by the Museum of Biblical Art. His other paintings like ?Simeon?s Moment? and ?Legacy? are awe inspiring and extremely breathtaking. These paintings have put the artist at an equal pedestal like the Van Gogh etc. Biblical paintings will never lose their luster because of their beauty and inspiration. It is worth buying a biblical painting to increase the beauty of one?s home.
Born on the North Side of Chicago, Ron DiCianni grew up in an unlikely area to produce a talented artist. After attending the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Ron embarked on a career in commercial illustration. Quickly recognized as one of the nation?s most talented illustrators, Ron?s client list was soon dominated by the top companies in America.

Colon Cancer Alliance and American College of Radiology demand Medicare cover virtual colonoscopy

American College of Radiology
In response to a study published online Feb. 23 in Radiology which showed that virtual colonoscopies are comparably affective to standard colonoscopy at detecting colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps in adults ages 65 and older, the Colon Cancer Alliance and the American College of Radiology released a joint statement demanding Medicare cover seniors for screening virtual colonoscopies also known as CT colonography.
"The minimal invasiveness and lower cost of CT colonography can attract more seniors to be screened if Medicare will cover them for the exam. Many seniors, who might not get tested otherwise, can't afford the added cost of paying for the exam themselves and may ultimately pay with their lives if Medicare does not provide coverage," said Andrew Spiegel, Colon Cancer Alliance Chief Executive officer.
The joint CCA/ACR statement noted that this latest study echoes results of a major study of patients ages 50 and older published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2008 and others since that demonstrated that CT colonography can serve as a frontline colorectal cancer screening tool.
"CT colonography is endorsed by the American Cancer Society as a recommended screening test. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Technology Evaluation Center (TEC) named virtual colonoscopy an effective screening tool. CIGNA, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and other insurers cover screening virtual colonoscopy. Yet, Medicare refuses to cover seniors for this life-saving exam. All the while, thousands die needlessly each year from a disease that is nearly always treatable when caught early. This must change," said Judy Yee, MD, chair of the American College of Radiology Colon Cancer Committee.

Molinari to head Google's D.C. office (Politico)
Former congresswoman Susan Molinari was named head of Google?s Washington office on Thursday, increasing the tech giant?s government firepower at a time of rising scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators on high-stakes issues that include privacy and antitrust.
Molinari, a well-liked and well-connected inside player, will begin in mid-March as Google?s vice president of public policy and government relations for the Americas. She will manage policy advocacy and government outreach in North and South America.
Continue ReadingMolinari joins Google from Susan Molinari Strategies, a government affairs consulting firm. When Molinari represented Staten Island in Congress from 1990 to 1997, she was elected to the House GOP majority leadership, making her the highest ranking Republican woman in Congress.
Former Sen. John Sununu, who overlapped with Molinari in the House, said in a phone interview that she is ?quick and sharp? and will be a big asset to Google.
?The Google office in Washington has not had someone with the visibility of a former member of Congress, and with her understanding of the complexities of the legislative process,? Sununu said, ?Google is receiving a higher level of scrutiny. ... When you?re such a large and growing company, you have to have a strong, visible, capable leader in Washington.?
Google is also getting a savvy and experienced communicator: Molinari left Congress to co-anchor "CBS News Saturday Morning.?
Her mission, according to a Google official, is to ?help lawmakers and regulators understand Google?s business ? both the technology and its impact on the economy and our culture.?
Molinari assumes the portfolio of Alan Davidson, who announced in November that he was leaving as head of Google?s Washington policy and lobbying operations. Davidson had opened Google?s Washington office.
David Drummond, Google?s senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer, said in a statement that he is ?excited about Susan joining Google.?
?She's a true trailblazer and her enthusiasm for our technology and its potential to change lives will be a real asset to our team in the Americas,? Drummond said.
Molinari, 53, is a member of one of the capital?s best known political families: She succeeded her father, Rep. Guy Molinari, in Congress, and is married to another former House Republican, William Paxon. Paxon, a former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, is a senior adviser at the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian gunners pounded an opposition stronghold where the last dispatches from a veteran American-born war correspondent chronicled the suffering of civilians caught in the relentless shelling. An intense morning barrage killed her and a French photojournalist ? two of 74 deaths reported Wednesday in Syria.
"I watched a little baby die today," Marie Colvin told the BBC from the embattled city of Homs on Tuesday in one of her final reports.
"Absolutely horrific, a 2-year old child had been hit," added Colvin, who worked for Britain's Sunday Times. "They stripped it and found the shrapnel had gone into the left chest and the doctor said, 'I can't do anything.' His little tummy just kept heaving until he died."
Colvin and photographer Remi Ochlik were among a group of journalists who had crossed into Syria and were sharing accommodations with activists, raising speculation that government forces targeted the makeshift media center, although opposition groups had previously described the shelling as indiscriminate. At least two other Western journalists were wounded.
Hundreds of people have died in weeks of siege-style attacks on Homs that have come to symbolize the desperation and defiance of the nearly year-old uprising against President Bashar Assad.
The Syrian military appears to be stepping up assaults to block the opposition from gaining further ground and political credibility with the West and Arab allies. On Wednesday, helicopter gunships reportedly strafed mountain villages that shelter the rebel Free Syrian Army, and soldiers staged door-to-door raids in Damascus, among other attacks.
The bloodshed and crackdowns brought some of the most galvanizing calls for the end of Assad's rule.
"That's enough now. The regime must go," said French President Nicolas Sarkozy after his government confirmed the deaths of Colvin, 56, and Ochlik, 28.
The U.S. and other countries have begun to cautiously examine possible military aid to the rebels. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton heads to Tunisia for a meeting Friday of more than 70 nations to look at ways to assist Assad's opponents, which now include hundreds of defected military officers and soldiers.
"This tragic incident is another example of the shameless brutality of the Assad regime," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said of the killing of the journalists.
In Saudi Arabia, the state news agency described King Abdullah scolding Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ? one of Assad's few remaining allies ? for joining China in vetoing a U.N. Security Council resolution this month condemning the violence.
But even Moscow said the ongoing bloodshed adds urgency for a cease-fire to allow talks between his regime and opponents.
Washington had strongly opposed arming anti-Assad forces, fearing it could bring Syria into a full-scale civil war. Yet the mounting civilian death tolls ? activists reported at least 74 across Syria on Wednesday ? has brought small but potentially significant shifts in U.S. strategies. It remains unclear, however, what kind of direct assistance the U.S. would be willing to provide.
The toppling of Assad also could mark a major blow to Iran, which depends on Damascus as its main Arab ally and a pathway to aid Iran's proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"We don't want to take actions that would contribute to the further militarization of Syria because that could take the country down a dangerous path," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. "But we don't rule out additional measures if the international community should wait too long and not take the kind of action that needs to be taken."
The U.N. estimates 5,400 people have been killed in repression by the Assad regime in the uprising that began 11 months ago. Syrian activists put the death toll at more than 7,300. Overall figures cannot be independently confirmed because Syrian authorities keep tight control on the media.
Twenty of the deaths reported Wednesday were in Homs, where resistance forces include breakaway soldiers. Homs has drawn comparisons to the Libyan city of Misrata, which withstood withering attacks last year by troops loyal to Moammar Gadhafi.
"It is a city of the cold and hungry, echoing to exploding shells and burst of gunfire," Colvin wrote in what would be her last story published Feb. 19. "There are no telephones and the electricity has been cut off. Few homes have diesel for the tin stoves they rely on for heat in the coldest winter that anyone can remember."
She described shrinking supplies of rice, tea and cans of tuna "delivered by a local sheik who looted them from a bombed-out supermarket."
"On the lips of everyone was the question, 'Why have we been abandoned by the world?'" she wrote.
Syrian activists said at least two other Western journalists ? French reporter Edith Bouvier of Le Figaro and British photographer Paul Conroy of the Sunday Times ? were wounded in Wednesday's shelling.
Amateur video posted online shows the two injured journalists in a makeshift clinic. The French journalist, Bouvier had her left leg tied from the thigh down in a cast. A doctor in the video explains that she needs emergency medical care. Conroy appears in the video and the doctors say he has deep gashes in his left leg.
In one tragic image, a man with a bandaged head is shown mourning his son, who was purportedly killed by government shelling in Homs on Saturday. The video was released by activists Wednesday and the details could not be confirmed. Colvin described seeing a 2-year-old child killed Tuesday and it did not appear to be related to that video.
A Homs-based activist, Omar Shaker, said the journalists were killed when several rockets hit a garden of a house used by activists and journalists in the besieged neighborhood of Baba Amr. Shaker said tanks and artillery began intensely shelling at 6:30 a.m. and was continuing hours later. He said the room used by journalists was hit around 10 a.m.
Amateur video posted online by activist showed what they claimed were bodies of the two journalists in the middle of a heavily damaged house. It said they were of the journalists. One of the dead was wearing what appeared to be a flak jacket.
The intense shelling in parts of Homs ? with blasts occurring sometimes just a few seconds apart ? appeared to have had no clear pattern over the past week, hitting homes and streets randomly. Some have suggested that the house used by the journalists and activists was pinpointed by Syrian gunners, perhaps by following the signals from satellite phones and other communication equipment.
The French culture minister, Frederic Mitterrand, claimed the journalists were "pursued" as they tried to find cover but he did not elaborate. A campaigner for online global activist group Avaaz, Alice Jay, said the group was "directly targeted."
Another Avaaz activist, Alex Renton, alleged that seven Syrians trying to reach Baba Amr with medical supplies and a respirator were found shot to death with their hands tied behind their back. Two other activists, including a foreign paramedic, traveling with the seven are missing, he added. The claims could not be immediately confirmed.
Many foreign journalists have been sneaking into Syria illegally in the past months with the help of smugglers from Lebanon and Turkey. Although the Syrian government has allowed some journalists into the country their movement is tightly controlled by Information Ministry minders.
Colvin, of East Norwich, N.Y., was a veteran foreign correspondent for the Sunday Times for the past two decades. She was instantly recognizable for an eye patch worn after being wounded covering conflicts in Sri Lanka in 2001.
Colvin said she would not "hang up my flak jacket" even after that injury.
"So, was I stupid? Stupid I would feel writing a column about the dinner party I went to last night," she wrote after the attack. "Equally, I'd rather be in that middle ground between a desk job and getting shot, no offense to desk jobs
Ochlik, who had set up a photo agency IP3 Press, won first prize in the general news category of the prestigious 2012 World Press Photo contest for his 12-photograph series titled "Battle For Libya."
"I just arrived in Homs, it's dark," Ochlik wrote to Paris Match correspondent Alfred de Montesquiou on Tuesday. "The situation seems very tense and desperate. The Syrian army is sending in reinforcements now and the situation is going to get worse ? from what the rebels tell us."
"Tomorrow, I'm going to start doing pictures," he added.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the killings of the journalists, calling them an "unacceptable escalation in the price that local and international journalists are being forced to pay" in Syria.
A statement by Information Minister Adnan Mahmoud said there was "no information" about Colvin, Ochlik and other foreign journalists in Syria who entered without official permission, the state-run news agency SANA reported. It warned all foreign journalists to come forward to "regularize their status."
In London, British diplomats summoned Syria's ambassador to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, asking Syrian officials to facilitate immediate arrangements for the repatriation of the journalists' bodies and for help with the medical treatment of the British journalist injured in the attack.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had no information that the bodies of the two slain journalists had been carried out of Homs.
On Tuesday, a Syrian sniper killed Rami al-Sayyed, a prominent activist in Baba Amr who was famous for posting online videos from Homs, colleagues said.
On Jan. 11, award-winning French TV reporter Gilles Jacquier was killed in Homs. The 43-year-old correspondent for France-2 Television was the first Western journalist to die since the uprising began in March. Syrian authorities have said he was killed in a grenade attack carried out by opposition forces ? a claim questioned by the French government, human rights groups and the Syrian opposition.
Last week, New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid died of an apparent asthma attack in Syria after he sneaked in to cover the conflict.
Elsewhere in Syria, the military intensified attacks.
In the northwestern province of Idlib, a main base of the Free Syrian Army, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that Syrian military helicopters fitted with machine guns strafed the village of Ifis. Syrian combat helicopters are primarily Russian-made, though they also have a number of French choppers.
Another opposition group, the Local Coordination Committees, said troops conducted raids in the Damascus district of Mazzeh district and the suburb of Jobar, where dozens of people were detained. In Jobar, the group said troops broke down doors of homes and shops and set up checkpoints.
The group also said troops backed by tanks stormed the southern village of Hirak and conducted a wave of arrests.
In the Gulf nation of Bahrain, some anti-Assad protesters at a Syria-Bahrain Olympic qualifying football match waved the rebel flag and threw shoes at a small group of pro-regime supporters.

BIOTECHNOLOGY -- Regenerating skin, muscle . . .
Researchers at the Bio-SANS instrument at the High Flux Isotope Reactor used contrast variation and small-angle neutron scattering to get a first insight into how macromolecules form single polyelectrolyte chains in synthetic complexes. The unique properties of polyelectrolyte materials are of intense interest in biotechnology for making a type of membrane -- three-dimensional bio-scaffolds to grow cells for regenerating skin, muscle and even organs. Little is known about how the component chains in polyelectrolyte complexes form themselves, whether as strings or as coils, inside the bulk material. The SANS work will assist researchers in tuning thickness, uniformity, stability, swelling, permeability and other important variables. The results could open the door to multiple future applications.

HEALTH -- Virus response to pH changes . . .
The Sindbis virus, or SINV, is the prototype for viruses spread by insects, which cause some of the most devastating and widespread diseases among humans. Exposure to low pH (acidic) conditions causes dramatic changes in the three-dimensional structure of SINV that can help the virus membrane fuse with a cell membrane when the pH returns to normal. Small-angle neutron scattering at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's High Flux Isotope Reactor is improving understanding of how SINV delivers its infectious RNA into host cells by revealing details of these structural changes. When the pH is reduced from 7.2 to 6.4, the RNA in the SINV core changes, and much of the protein associated with the interior liquid bi-layer moves to the exterior of the virus particle. The SANS data, the first to show how the RNA and lipid components interact with the virus proteins as the pH changes, improve understanding of the effects of pH on SINV, which is an excellent model for studies of virus structure and function.

FUSION -- Supporting ITER systems . . .
U.S. ITER researchers at the Fusion Pellet Fueling Lab at Oak Ridge National Laboratory are developing and testing pellet injector technology for fueling and controlling the hot plasma in the ITER tokamak experimental reactor. Current research is focused on U.S. ITER contributions to fueling, disruption mitigation and vacuum systems. The work includes pellets and injectors to both fuel the plasma and control plasma edge localized instabilities. A novel pellet extruder has been developed to provide a continuous flow of solid hydrogen that can be cut into precisely sized pellets. Finally, a gas injection system to rapidly bring down a turbulent plasma when needed, a diagnostic to measure pellet mass in flight, and a roughing pump system to pump exhaust to the processing plant complete recent tokamak technology.

NEUTRONS -- Examining nanoporous carbons . . .
Several recent papers describe how Oak Ridge National Laboratory researcher Yuri Melnichenko and his collaborators continue to use neutrons and small-angle neutron scattering to bore through geological materials such as nanoporous carbons to understand their unique properties as storage media for greenhouse gases and for hydrogen in fuel cells used in transportation. The SANS method also shows promise for strategies for extracting a cleaner form of energy -- methane gas -- from hard shales. In other recent work on the behavior of CO2 confined in nanopores, the researchers turned to a silica aerogel model system as a good matrix material. They varied the silica aerogel surface chemistry to see how this influenced the phase behavior of the molecules of stored CO2.

Why the rush? Consumers who sold their original iPads before the iPad 2 was announced were able to fetch higher prices from eBay, and resellers such as Gazelle and NextWorth, than those who waited to list theirs until after the iPad 2 arrived in stores.

Am I developing a bad habit or an eating disorder? | Health and ...
Question by cJrnHY45: Am I developing a bad habit or an eating disorder?
Over the past few months I?ve been thoroughly counting calories I eat in the day, down to the point where I write in a word document what I will be eating for the day, and the next day, sometimes i plan a couple days ahead what every meal will be, the calories, protein and the time I should be eating it. I have had a few catalogged ?cheat days? in the past either because I totally lost control or social setting influenced the consumption of more than desirable calories.
But I feel like I lose control sometimes, like I know how many calories im supposed to eat in a day, but sometimes I gorge those specific foods and I stop so that I dont eat everything in the plan for the day. I know what my maintenance calories are, or at least I?m pretty sure as I?ve been able to be somewhat consistent and haven?t gained or lost weight in the last 6 or so months. (I have just recently lost a lot of weight, over 100 lbs in the last 2 years), am at 166lbs, age 23 male, 6?0, and have been eating much healthier in general, but now I?ve gotten to the point where all I think about it food, calories and meal plans, I think I?m obsessed. I think about protein intake, sugar consumption, white or whole grain, etc.
Sometimes I also eat my meals really fast to. I drink plenty of liquids (Although, also lots of diet soda, I know its not good for me, I know this may be contributing to the eating impulse, but I dont know that the impulse is actually hunger or psycological) I almost feel like I could eat till I burst (and have almost a few times), it seems to me like I?ve expanded my stomach beyond that of a normal person, and Im a bit worried about that. When I?m at home or idle there?s not much to do when Im not working out or working on school work. (Even when I?m out of the house or hanging out with people food crosses my mind) could it be I?m becoming a boredom or emotional eater? I?ve always had snacking problems in the past but now that I have this calorie counting ?weapon? at my aid its like its the only thing between me and gaining weight again.
Also, I tend to eat VERY heavy in the morning, or within 3 hours of waking, usually around the 9 to noon period, and then tend to take it very light in the evening, I always make sure to ?save? calories for an hour or two before bed so I don?t go to bed hungry or anything. An example, I dont work till later in the day, I am either idle at the computer or working on school work, if my average maintenance calories is at about 2700, I try to plan and spread this out through 5-7 meals in the day.
Whats been happening alot lately is Instead of the 400-500 calories meals, I might just say screw it and eat 1k?s worth of those calories in two or three sittings (getting up to get more), and within a few hours like half of my daily alloted calories are consumed, and I have to watch it.
Any thoughts? Suggestions? Should I try getting help or changing my ways? Sorry its a long read.
