D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray announced his new communications director on Monday while admitting his administration has struggled to effectively get out his message to the public during its first 11 months.
He also named his new deputy chief of staff after the previous one served for less than two weeks then resigned after it was revealed she illegally voted in the District.
Gray's former communications director, Linda Wharton-Boyd, has been reassigned to the D.C. Department of Health.
"There?s an awful lot going on and yes, there are days when I feel like the message hasn?t gotten out there as much as we would like [it] to," Gray said at a news conference. However, he added that the media has also done more than a fair share, he thought, of negative reporting.
Replacing Boyd is Pedro Ribiero, the communications director and deputy chief of staff to Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif. Sheila Bunn, the former chief of staff to D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, was named as Gray's deputy chief of staff.
Gray's chief of staff, Chris Murphy, acknowledged that the speed at which Gray's message has reached reporters and the public has been lacking. He said Ribiero and Bunn's experience on Capital Hill would help fix that.
"The pace ? as everyone in this room knows ? of media has changed," Murphy said. "I think Pedro and Sheila have experienced that first-hand and that kind of speedy reaction will help us get out the mayor's agenda. ... In the communications realm, I think the Hill is used to that 24-hour news cycle."
