The congressman entered the hotel ballroom with his jaw clenched and eyes popped wide, desperate to dodge TV cameras, flashes and shouted questions.

Then Representative Anthony D. Weiner put his head down and near-sprinted to the podium. Once there, he offered less self-immolation than peel-the-skin-back public therapy, as if a $500-an-hour session could be conducted before a vast gaggle of overheated reporters.

This man who for so long has played the perpetual juvenile, the jokester, became that rare sight, a politician making a clean breast of his lies ? or some of his deceits anyway. The unspoken prospect was that far worse was about to be unleashed.
