Pentagon Confronts New Enemy: Rust

It scours the bottom of Navy ships, invades the crevices of Air Force jets and costs the Defense Department $23 billion a year. It?s not a clandestine agent or biological weapon. In fact, it?s in your home right now.

It?s rust.

Apparently, rust is pretty expensive (and ugly). Fighting corrosion costs over 3 percent of the national GDP, or about $1,000 per person per year. The Defense Department estimates that it will spend $114.5 billion over the next five years on the nasty nuisance.

It?s a problem because corrosion happens to anything exposed to weather ? old things in particular. Which means that all those Cold War-era jets, tankers and bombers are hit especially hard. For the bulk of this ancient fleet ? built before any of its current pilots were even born ? that corrosion is only getting worse. Since the Pentagon and Congress haven?t gotten their act together to replace these clunkers, they ? and the rust ? may stick around for a while.

Even new planes aren?t safe; leaky F-22?s are expected to cost the Air Force millions. And rust is a constant problem for the Navy, since it has a notoriously hard time avoiding salt water.

So how do we deal with all this metallic decay? The Defense Department Corrosion Office has some ideas. Set up in 2003, the aptly named CorrDefense agency is all-out dedicated to hunt down rust wherever it may appear. If you?re not feeling quite so passionate about the endeavor, this inspirational video by enthused rust-buster Daniel Dunmire might get you fired up.

Otherwise, the U.S. Navy?s Mega Rust 2011 conference is sure to stir up some anti-corrosion sentiment. This annual get-together of military personnel, government officials, researchers, manufacturers and suppliers seeks to advance the decorrosifying agenda.

Technically, the problem is bigger than just rust. Rust is only the most commonly known type of corrosion, and occurs when iron reacts with water or moist air. The broader category includes any type of metal broken down or disintegrated by a chemical reaction.

There are all sorts of ways to get a grip on this pesky scourge. Coating surfaces with a paint or spray is a common treatment, but this sort of rust-proofing doesn?t last very long. It?s easy to miss hard to reach places, and those unprotected spots are most prone to damage. Even a tiny chip, crack or peel will start to break down. Without constant maintenance and frequent recoating, rust is inevitable.

While the military is looking into more coating options ? from aluminum- to polyurethane-based waterproofing ? there are some alternatives. Cathodic protection is an electrochemical process that prevents corrosion entirely, and superfinishing is a surface treatment process that prevents damage from friction.

Combined with better maintenance, new technologies could cut costs by 30% over 20 years, Dunmire recently told Bloomberg news.

Until then, with anti-corrosion online training games like Inspect and Protect or Protocol 424, you can fight the insidious menace yourself. Dunmire would be proud.

The Evolution of Technology ? The History of Computers ...

The Evolution of Technology ? The History of Computers

While computers are now an important part of the lives of human beings, there was a time where computers did not exist. Knowing the history of computers and how much progression has been made can help you understand just how complicated and innovative the creation of computers really is.

Unlike most devices, the computer is one of the few inventions that does not have one specific inventor. Throughout the development of the computer, many people have added their creations to the list required to make a computer work. Some of the inventions have been different types of computers, and some of them were parts required to allow computers to be developed further.

The Beginning

Perhaps the most significant date in the history of computers is the year 1936. It was in this year that the first ?computer? was developed. It was created by Konrad Zuse and dubbed the Z1 Computer. This computer stands as the first as it was the first system to be fully programmable. There were devices prior to this, but none had the computing power that sets it apart from other electronics.

It wasn?t until 1942 that any business saw profit and opportunity in computers. This first company was called ABC computers, owned and operated by John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. Two years later, the Harvard Mark I computer was developed, furthering the science of computing.

Over the course of the next few years, inventors all over the world began to search more into the study of computers, and how to improve upon them. Those next ten years say the introduction of the transistor, which would become a vital part of the inner workings of the computer, the ENIAC 1 computer, as well as many other types of systems. The ENIAC 1 is perhaps one of the most interesting, as it required 20,000 vacuum tubes to operate. It was a massive machine, and started the revolution to build smaller and faster computers.

The age of computers was forever altered by the introduction of International Business Machines, or IBM, into the computing industry in 1953. This company, over the course of computer history, has been a major player in the development of new systems and servers for public and private use. This introduction brought about the first real signs of competition within computing history, which helped to spur faster and better development of computers. Their first contribution was the IBM 701 EDPM Computer.

A Programming Language Evolves

A year later, the first successful high level programming language was created. This was a programming language not written in ?assembly? or binary, which are considered very low level languages. FORTRAN was written so that more people could begin to program computers easily.

The year 1955, the Bank of America, coupled with Stanford Research Institute and General Electric, saw the creation of the first computers for use in banks. The MICR, or Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, coupled with the actual computer, the ERMA, was a breakthrough for the banking industry. It wasn?t until 1959 that the pair of systems were put into use in actual banks.

During 1958, one of the most important breakthroughs in computer history occurred, the creation of the integrated circuit. This device, also known as the chip, is one of the base requirements for modern computer systems. On every motherboard and card within a computer system, are many chips that contain information on what the boards and cards do. Without these chips, the systems as we know them today cannot function.

Gaming, Mice, & the Internet

For many computer users now, games are a vital part of the computing experience. 1962 saw the creation of the first computer game, which was created by Steve Russel and MIT, which was dubbed Spacewar.

The mouse, one of the most basic components of modern computers, was created in 1964 by Douglass Engelbart. It obtained its name from the ?tail? leading out of the device.

One of the most important aspects of computers today was invented in 1969. ARPA net was the original Internet, which provided the foundation for the Internet that we know today. This development would result in the evolution of knowledge and business across the entire planet.

It wasn?t until 1970 that Intel entered the scene with the first dynamic RAM chip, which resulted in an explosion of computer science innovation.

On the heels of the RAM chip was the first microprocessor, which was also designed by Intel. These two components, in addition to the chip developed in 1958, would number among the core components of modern computers.

A year later, the floppy disk was created, gaining its name from the flexibility of the storage unit. This was the first step in allowing most people to transfer bits of data between unconnected computers.

The first networking card was created in 1973, allowing data transfer between connected computers. This is similar to the Internet, but allows for the computers to connect without use of the Internet.

Household PC?s Emerge

The next three years were very important for computers. This is when companies began to develop systems for the average consumer. The Scelbi, Mark-8 Altair, IBM 5100, Apple I and II, TRS-80, and the Commodore Pet computers were the forerunners in this area. While expensive, these machines started the trend for computers within common households.

One of the most major breathroughs in computer software occurred in 1978 with the release of the VisiCalc Spreadsheet program. All development costs were paid for within a two week period of time, which makes this one of the most successful programs in computer history.

1979 was perhaps one of the most important years for the home computer user. This is the year that WordStar, the first word processing program, was released to the public for sale. This drastically altered the usefulness of computers for the everyday user.

The IBM Home computer quickly helped revolutionize the consumer market in 1981, as it was affordable for home owners and standard consumers. 1981 also saw the the mega-giant Microsoft enter the scene with the MS-DOS operating system. This operating system utterly changed computing forever, as it was easy enough for everyone to learn.

The Competition Begins : Apple vs. Microsoft

Computers saw yet another vital change during the year of 1983. The Apple Lisa computer was the first with a graphical user interface, or a GUI. Most modern programs contain a GUI, which allows them to be easy to use and pleasing for the eyes. This marked the beginning of the out dating of most text based only programs.

Beyond this point in computer history, many changes and alterations have occurred, from the Apple-Microsoft wars, to the developing of microcomputers and a variety of computer breakthroughs that have become an accepted part of our daily lives. Without the initial first steps of computer history, none of this would have been possible.

Jason Statham's 'Expendables' Surgery at Center of Insurance Fight

Alta Vista Prod., a producer of last year's hit action film? The Expendables, is fighting with its insurance company over the reimbursement of more than $1 million. The production outfit claims it is owed money from St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company after having to put the film on a two-week hiatus when star Jason Statham had to undergo minor surgery to remove a growth in his throat.

According to the complaint filed in July in Louisiana federal court,?St. Paul Fire and?Travelers Companies?issued an insurance policy to cover various risks associated with the movie's production. The film starred many older action stars, including Sylvester Stalllone, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis?and Arnold Schwarzenegger, so obviously, health risks needed to be watched carefully.

It turned out that it was Statham's throat condition that caused the most fuss on set.

Filming was scheduled to begin in Brazil on April 6, 2009, but had to be delayed a couple weeks following Statham's medical examinations.

However, in a motion for partial summary judgment filed last week by the insurance companies, Alta Vista allegedly made a "premature" decision to suspend shooting. St. Paul points to opinions from Statham's doctors at the time that it was "highly likely at that time that [Statham] should be able to continue with the remainder of his filming for the following six weeks without any additional intervention."

Alta Vista decided not to take a chance for the "worst case scenario" with the "unilateral election" for a two-week delay so that Statham could get treatment. Later, the production company submitted a claim for $1.1 million.

The two sides are also fighting over claims made over Stallone too. The actor injured his ankle causing a loss of $306,146, but Alta Vista says it has only received a??$139,439 partial payment.

Film and TV Focus Lifts Entertainment One Profits

TORONTO ? Entertainment One?s shift from disc and digital entertainment wholesaling to filmed entertainment is paying dividends.

The Toronto-based indie producer and distributor on Monday posted a pre-tax profit of $18.4 million for the year to March 31, against pre-tax earnings of $12.9 million in 2010, on overall revenue up 12 per cent to $752.9 million.

Entertainment One, which trades on the London Stock Exchange, also posted adjusted earnings of $51.8 million, against a year-earlier $37.4 million.

The full-year 2011 earnings were adjusted for one-time charges, including acquisition costs and share-based payments, and $24.7 million in amortisation of acquired intangible assets.

Entertainment One, which has nine TV series airing in the U.S. market, including ABC?s Rookie Blue and HBO?s Hung, in recent years has expanded and invested in film and TV production to the point that division now surpasses in revenue its North American physical warehousing and distribution operation.

Full-year film and TV revenue jumped 9 per cent to $374 million on continuing growth in Canadian and British markets, with underlying EBITDA for filmed entertainment rising 27 per cent from $37.7 million.

P&A costs for film releases rose 26 per cent to $121 million.

Among Entertainment One?s movie releases was Gnomeo & Juliet 3D released in Canada and Britain, and the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which came to the Canadian distributor via a lucrative supply deal with Summit Entertainment.

Entertainment One also has an agreement with Netflix to license films as they enter the Canadian market.

Elsewhere, TV revenue jumped 55 per cent to $109 million, against a year-earlier $70.4 million.

On the DVD, CD and video game distribution front, Entertainment One saw revenue for its legacy wholesaling business fall 8 percent to $366.6 million, owing to fewer Hollywood blockbuster releases and a continuing DVD sales slump in full-year 2011.

?Market conditions are expected to remain difficult for the foreseeable future and as such the business is focusing on maximising its revenues and reducing costs where possible, although profitability is expected to decline year on year in line with market expectations,? the company said in commentary that accompanied its results.

Given the challenges facing its distribution business, Entertainment One is continuing to focus and invest in film and television content acquisition and distribution across multiple territories.

The company released 121 films theatrically in fiscal 2011, generating total box office of $202 million, up from $156 million in 2010.

Entertainment One acquired Australian distributor Hopscotch in April and raised coin for additional acquisitions from a UK share placement in March.

On the TV front, Entertainment One delivered 269 half hours programming, while diversifying into ancillary sales as Peppa Pig became a top UK pre-school toy property in 2010 ahead of recently launching on Nick Jr. in the U.S. market.
